Leading Forward

“Imagine all the past versions of yourself standing right in front of you, they are all smiling, looking back at you, they are so proud of you.” This quote by Dr. James Rouse, which I came across on social media last year, has stayed with me. It resonates deeply as I reflect on my journey through nearly two decades in education, even  inspiring me to share my own experiences in my book, The Leader Inside.

In the book, I recount moments like being invited to participate in a panel discussion, where I shared my personal journey and the path that ultimately guided me toward leadership. I remember standing in a packed room filled with educators from various backgrounds, the energy palpable as upbeat music set the tone for reflection. I thought about how I arrived at this moment and the people who believed in me along the way.

As the panel began, each leader shared stories of perseverance, rejection, and triumph. I was struck by their authenticity and by how their experiences mirrored the ebbs and flows of leadership. When it was my turn to speak, I shared a piece of my own story:

“Getting to where I am now did not come easily. It took amazing people to see my strengths and lift me up when I had fallen. While there have been remarkable moments in my career, the disappointments were just as important. They shaped my growth and taught me that happiness doesn’t simply exist in where we are, it lives in what we do to get there.”

Reflecting on that day, I realized that great leaders focus not on “I” but on “we,” lifting others and leading forward to pave the way for the next generation. It’s a lesson I carry with me, especially as I think about the possibilities a new year brings.

So, I ask you: Where are you now, and where do you want to be? In best-selling book Atomic Habits, James Clear writes, “Your life bends in the direction of your habits. Every action you take is a vote for the person you want to become.” As you step into the new year, consider the leader you wish to become.

For me, the answer remains the same: I wish to become the leader I always needed. Your actions, reflections, and experiences are shaping a story that can positively impact others.

As you step into this next chapter, take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come.

Imagine all the past versions of yourself, standing right in front of you, they are all smiling, looking back at you, they are so proud of you.

And as you move forward, continue leading forward, knowing this:

I’m so proud of you too.
